Excuse me, i need a little bit more belacan!

0
Is it just me, or has the world really gone wacko lately?

Yesterday's 8pm news reported an elderly woman from Dungun, Terengganu was charged for
violating the Food Regulations 1985. The law stipulates that shrimp paste should contain at least 25% protein. The ones she was selling at rm2.50 each, had about 23.75% protein. She was fined RM600!
The fact that she was old, sells belacan for a living and fined for selling belacan that has 1.25% less protein that was allowed, is to me, quite ridiculous. She probably earns much less than RM600 a month. How on earth would a small belacan maker/seller from a kampung to know how many percent of protein is in her ingredients la?A state of the art belacan laboratory in her backyard?

And this was on prime time news!

Menaruh Harapan : The Tragic and Ironic Story of Zaiton Sameon

0
I was reading a local entertainment paper the other day and came across a story about Zaiton Sameon, the singer who was famed after her song Menaruh Harapan in the early nineties.

That song was and always be stuck in my head (and many more who was born in the late 70s or early 80s. It was a sad song, like most Malay songs, but her vocals and how she sang it was truly memorable. It was as if she really sang the words like she meant it, and that was the time when her singing career truly prospered.I don't remember exactly how long she was in a coma after the incident, but i think it was quite some time. She got well, but was reported by the media to be mentally unstable (who wouldn't be, she had lost her son?) soon after. I remember an excerpt reporting "she kept calling out to her son when she woke up from her coma." which i find deeply saddening and to a point, disturbing.

Even so, her singing career was not without its controversies (which was considered hot at that time);

i.She wore a sexy Jungle Jane costume and her duet, Fareez, ex husband of Noraniza Idris, a Malay Classic singer at a dinner event.

ii.Rejected songs made by A.Ali for her second album because she said his songs were meant for dangdut, even though A.Ali made her the songs that made her famous in the first album. One of the songs was given to another singer, Rohana Jalil, which made her famous. The song name was 'Rayuanku'.

iii.Slapped a public relations officer under her label FGM on reasons that are unknown.

iv.Wore a thin sexy dress while dipping in a pool in her most famous song's video clip 'Menaruh Harapan' for 1987's Juara Lagu.(Unfortunately the video clip at Youtube's embedding script has been disabled by request)

So I was dumbfounded, although was not entirely surprised when the paper reported that after the tragic accident that claimed the life of her son and left her in a coma for many years after, her luck in life has not really changed. Her life is in ruins nowadays. Her singing career gone down the drain, broke, old and left by everyone (including her family) She is now staying with her best friend, who takes care of her, who is also about her age.She now earns a living occassionally by singing at village weddings.

After reading that article, i opened up an MP3 of her song, Menaruh Harapan and listened to it for awhile. What surprised me the most was the lyrics, as it is ironically similar to her life now, and remember, she sang this at the top of her career in the early 90s, even before everything that happened to her.Pay close attention to the chorus..

Sepanjang perjalanan ini
Lembah dan lurah kulewati
Ketenangan yang kucari
belum kutemui

Ku menghimpun doa bertahun
mencari perpohonan rimbun
bertemu dahan nan rapuh
dapat ku berteduh

CHORUS
Dulu aku sendiri kini masih sendiri
hadapi hidup ini
susah senang diriku
tak bertempat mengadu
seperti burung kepatahan sayap
dihati kecil, ku menaruh harapan

Selagi hidup belum sudah

I don't know about you, but that song still, and will always send a shiver down my spine.

Ramadhan Buffet at Equatorial Hotel

1
Ramadhan is coming, and so everyone is looking forward to the foodfest.

It is strange that in a month of restraint everyone is looking to enjoy the bounty at an extraordinary pace but this is Ramadhan in Malaysia

Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur is known for their food so their buffet is one of the better ones in the city, it is not cheap though, this premium buka Puasa is priced at RM95 ++ per person but they do have offers like Early bird special from Aug21 to Aug31 when you can enjoy their sumptuous spread for only RM88 ++ per person.

We tried the food and were generally satisfied with the quality and preentation of the dishes.

Worthy of note were the Daging Masak Lemak Nangka (Beef stewed in coconut milk with jackfruit), Nasi Ayam (Chicken Rice), Briyani Gam (Special briyani rice) and the range of traditional Malay dishes on the spread.

Those with a sweet tooth would also enjoy the large dessert range which include everything from Jelly to local delicacies like Cendol, Ais Kacang and Kuih Seri Muka.

If you like Satay, Equatorial's meat-on-stick offering is lean and low fat, of course some people say satay cannot be satay without some beef or chicken fat skewered in between the lean meat but in these day and age when healthy living is the mantra, people want their satay and keep their cholesterol at 4.0.

The overal ambience at the Nipah Coffee Shop, with its warm lighting and cosy divisions and sections allows diners to enjoy the spread of a hotel kitchen while still retaining some sense of privacy.

But do come early because the 'extra' section is by the staircase and, you really do not want to be tabled there if at all possible.

Why you should be nice to the garbage man

Want to know the colonel's secret?

2

William Poundstone's new Book - Big Secrets puts all the 'Secret Recipes' to the lab and found out exactly what was in them.

Colonel Sanders of KFC has always claimed that his recipe contained 11 secret herbs and spices but lab tests indicate that there are only four ingredients in the mix. Why don't you guess what they are before you read on.

Coca Cola's secret recipe was also uncovered by by the author and he lists them in detail. This recipe is a lot more complex and would take even a good food technologist some time to replicate, especially without a good chef or taster correcting the mix.

Below is an extract from a report in LiveScience

The Truth Behind Secret Recipes in Coke, KFC, Etc.

"Everybody loves secrets, mystery, and intrigue. That's why mystery novels and films have been popular for decades, and why shows like "The X-Files" and "Lost" are cult hits.

The commercial appeal of a good mystery (real or manufactured) has not been lost on advertisers. "Mystery meat" aside, several famous brands have emphasized the uniqueness of their secret-ingredient-containing products.

But is there really any such thing as a "secret ingredient" these days? After all, over the past decade consumers have gotten more and more disclosure about what's in the food they eat-- everything from calorie content to food allergy information. Furthermore, laboratory analysis has kept up with the times. Perhaps when A.J. Bush baked his first recipe in 1908, or when the Coca-Cola company was founded in 1892, there was no way to determine what "secret ingredients" might be in a product.

But these days, any laboratory worth its sodium chloride can tell pretty much what chemicals and ingredients appear in what quantities of a given sample. It's food science, not rocket science.

In his book "Big Secrets," William Poundstone revealed a laboratory analysis of Kentucky Fried Chicken: "The sample of coating mix was found to contain four and only four ingredients: flour, salt, monosodium glutamate, and black pepper. There were no eleven herbs and spices — no herbs at all in fact... Nothing was found in the sample that couldn't be identified." So much for the "secret." In fact, the chicken's ingredient statement is available on KFC's Web site.

As for Coke Classic, well, the formula can be found on page 43 of Poundstone's book, but it includes vanilla extract, citrus oils, and lime juice flavoring.

There's no cocaine in Coke, and technically there never was, though it uses coca leaves and kola nuts as flavorings and stimulants. Cocaine is not the same as the coca leaf it is derived from; for centuries, natives in South American countries regularly chewed on the coca leaf for its anesthetic and mild stimulant properties. But just as chewing on a coca leaf is not "taking cocaine," neither is drinking a Coke."

Things our kids will never know they never knew

0
Such is the pace of technology that things that we learned and cherished during our lifetime are obsolete and considered ancient tech by our kids..

Wired magazine came up with a list of 100 things our kids will never know.

I think this list is telling about the speed of progress and also where our priorities lie..

Would it not be nice if the things our kids will never know were to include

1. Worrying about how to pay for college education
2. Fear of global war
3. Hate crime
4. Credit cards
5. cigarette smoke

There are some things in this world that will never be forgotten, this week’s 40th anniversary of the moon landing for one. But Moore’s Law and our ever-increasing quest for simpler, smaller, faster and better widgets and thingamabobs will always ensure that some of the technology we grew up with will not be passed down the line to the next generation of geeks.

That is, of course, unless we tell them all about the good old days of modems and typewriters, slide rules and encyclopedias …

Perodua waves farewell to the Kancil

Favourite model is replaced by Viva 660BX

After a long run of 15 good years, the Kancil is finally to be replaced and the model that will take the mantle is the Viva 660 in bare bones trim.

Thanks to the extremely basic equipment level, the Viva 660BX is only RM2,000 more than Kancil it replaces.

OK so it may be basic but you still get a DVVT motor, more modern and rigid body shell and advanced fuel injection system.

Proton launches new brand-building campaign

Owners are turned into Mini Ambassadors through positive experience at Proton

It is a simple enough plan, invite owners to the plant to receive their cars, give them a tour of the facilities and let them loose for an hour or so on the test track and impress them with the skills of Proton test drivers in a Lotus Elise.

Hopefully they leave impressed and share the positive experience with their family, friends and neighbours.

If the initial reaction of the first group of customers is anything to go by, the plan seems to be working a treat

STREES PERLU UBAT KE?

0
Jiwa Kacau

•Ketidakupayaan memenuhi tuntutan persekitaran.
•Gangguan fungsi kehidupan

Sian diorg tu. Kalau laa diaorg tu sama besar ngan ko dan boleh melawan tak pa laaa. Boleh laa tengok sapa yg kena.Ingat-ingatla pada tuhan. Dapatkan ketenangan diri daripadaNya. Amin..
Jom Poker………

main game jer...

Movie Review - Transformers : Revenge of The Fallen

0
Autobots, transform and roll out!

Those were the words that i remember the most from the Transformers cartoon series when i was a kid. I had small miniature Transformer action figures (the big ones was expensive) and I have never failed to watch every episode of it, and i even i bought the last original transformers movie on VHS! At least, i thought it was the last one. So when i heard that Micheal Bay, director of many blockbusters such as Bad Boys, The Rock was planning to direct a movie based on the hit cartoon series, i was in awe. Transformers. Coming back to life, in real life, in cinemas.

Wow.

When the movie came out, i could not get a chance to see it until a few weeks of its release. But the wait was well worth it. It blew my mind, and everyone else. The CGI was astonishing, and storyline was well crafted, though the robot characters was slightly different than i thought it would be. I even got so excited, i bought the DVD! But when the movie ended, i was partly sad and curious. The ending did not show a slight hint of a sequel, but i was really, really hoping for one. I wanted a sequel where all the Transformers i knew to be in a sequel. Soundwave, the Constructicons, everything.

And they did.

Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen. Wuhoo! A sequel! Micheal Bay, an avid Transformers fan, made the sequel even better. I got two tickets for me and the Mrs at a non THX cinema, but i could not care less, to be honest. When Bumblebee first came/transformed out in the first scene, i was transformed into a kid again.
The sequel is about the revenge of the Fallen, the only remaining Decepticon leaders stuck in Decepticon planet (which the movie failed to mention the name) with a mission to destroy the Autobots on earth by resurrecting Megatron, who died in the first movie while the Autobots, working together with a special, undercover US Army unit called N.E.S.T on missions to hunt down and destroy the remaining Decepticons on earth.
Sam Witwicky, the Autobots' human friend is enrolling in to college, but decided to leave his trusty robot friend, Bumblebee and cute girlfriend, Mikaela behind.(I'd probably leave Bee behind, but Mikaela??) On his first day in college, Sam found a piece of The Cube in one of his jacket (washing machine resistant i assume) and the piece started to interfere with his brainwave or something, making him see jumbled up codes he doesnt understand at the same time turning him into a boy genius (he could read an astronomy college text book in a few minutes).
For some reason, the Decepticons are now searching for that piece of Cube, and found that it is with Sam, (Surprise!) though i would rather it be with Mikaela, so she could be strip searched. And the chase/hunt/destroying begins!
The sequel is better in CGI, but i found the robot characters made less intelligent this time. Bumblebee is made into a pet for Sam, there are two new Autobot twins that speaks like they are thugs from Brooklyn, New York. It was (the sequel) as if they made it to please everyone, especially the Paramount Pictures top management, desperately. No wonder the movie got bad reviews from the major critics (read here and here.)Yes, the CGI was mind blowing, and seeing a Transformer in a movie beats everything else, but it shadowed everything human about the movie.
Nevertheless, there are some cool stuff you can find on the official movie website like Robotize yourself,(yes, you can upload your photo and merge it with a robot from the movie)and check out awesome Transformers toys, news and reviews here.I posted mine on Facebook.Heh.

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett dies

0
CARDIAC ARREST: The King of Pop was rushed to UCLA Medical Centre after suffering cardiac arrest at home

CANCER TOOK HER LIFE: After a two-year battle, Farah Fawcett finally dies. She was surrounded by friends and family.

I woke up this morning and the first thing that my wife said to me is that Michael Jackson had died.
We immediately turned on CNN to find out the latest and sure enough, the Rev. Al Sharpton was on screen in front of the famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, reminding everyone just how big a talent Michael was in his life and the influence h exerted on the world's music scene.

Immediately my memory went back to the History Tour, the las time I saw the superstar live. I covered his arrival in Malaysia as a journalist and remember seeing him up close at the Concorde Hotel.

He was just as everyone on TV right now describe him, he was a fragile porcelain of a person and had a wispy voice that simply make you want to protect him and at the same time most people find it hard to embrace him when up close and personal because of the news that painted him as an eccentric.

CNN's report tried very much to divert attention to the news of lawsuits adn financial excesses that coloured Micheal's life towards teh end but Larry King said it best when he reminded everyone to focus on what is proven, Michael's talent and how he made billions happy.

On the same day, one of Charlie's Angels also left us. Beauttiful and talented actress Farrah Fawcett had benn battling with cancer for two years and she finally passed away last night, surrounded by friends and family.

These two personalities formed two big pillar's in the entertainment indsutry during my childhood and growing years and despite the fact that they are quite distant from me now, tears flowed when CNN played Beat it, Thriller, Billy Jean and We Are the World.

The reality is that it is impossible not to feel sad about the passing of someone who brought so much happiness to us.

There will be controversy surrounding Michael's death as much as his life. There are persistent rumour that he may have converted to Islam so the other question my wife asked was: How are they going to bury him? the Muslim way or not?

Whatever it is, it is my dearest hope that both will attain dignity in death.

May God bless theri souls for they brought happiness to billions adn what better way to appreciate the life that God has granted us than by being happy.

Below are two news clippings about the deaths

Farrah Fawcett dies at 62

LOS ANGELES: Actress Farrah Fawcett, best known for her role in television series “Charlie’s Angels”, died after a long battle with cancer on Thursday. She was 62.

Fawcett died in hospital surrounded by friends and family shortly before 1630 GMT, reports said. “After a long and brave battle with cancer, Farrah has passed away,” said a statement released by Fawcett’s publicist Arnold Robinson. afp

AP Source: Michael Jackson dies in LA hospital
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY and DERRIK J. LANG
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted child star who rose to become the "King of Pop" and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. He was 50.

The person said Jackson died in a Los Angeles hospital. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told the newspaper.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album "Thriller" _ which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" _ remains the biggest-selling album of all time, with more than 26 million copies.

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

By some measures, he ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. In fact, he united two of music's biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie.

As years went by, he became an increasingly freakish figure _ a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grownup life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice. He surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, often wore a germ mask while traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions.

In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him. The case took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.

Jackson was preparing for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13. He was in rehearsals in Los Angeles for the concert, an extravaganza that was to capture the classic Jackson magic: showstopping dance moves, elaborate staging and throbbing dance beats.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital as word of his death spread. The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center, which is near Jackson's rented home, was roped off with police tape.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Jackson has just died," a woman boarding a Manhattan bus called out, shortly after the news was annunced. Immediately many riders reached for their cell phones.

In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend sent to his telephone. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."

Tie knots

You guys probably already know how to tie a tie but hey we we can always learn a few more ways to tie our tie.
I know I looked at these instructions closely again just to make sure that I have been doing it right, apparently I usually do four-in-hand or half Windsor, I only use Windsor when the tie is too long or I want to look extra formal

I have not tried the shell knot but I bet it's good for use with less structured suits and that sort of thing
